Bon Iver - for emma, forever ago

A few days ago I logged onto my Skype account and Olivier (fellow contributor) had left me an IM with a link to Bon Ivers’ new album. I thanked him for the link and closed the window out. Later that evening I had a few minutes to spare so I went online and clicked on the link. I was immediately addicted. I can’t take credit for this find and I apologize in advance Olly if you were planning on writing about Bon Iver, but I just felt that this was/is too good not to share.

For some of you whom I’ve had off line conversations about what my album pick of the year would be, you would know that the new Josh Ritter has been ranking high on my list. Let me tell you Bon Iver is a closing in on him, very close. His album has been recorded but no actual date of release has been mentioned. I was lucky enough to get a few of his songs sent to me but am anxiously awaiting the release of the album to hold it in my hands. I’m just a sucker for the real thing.

This is the reason why I love music so much. It’s not often that you find an artist that you can connect to. Ray LaMontagne did it for me a few years back and I can’t really explain what it is other than the music just speaks to me. Bon Iver’s music just spoke to me and I can’t stop listening, playing, analyzing, and connecting to it all. “Skinny Love” became an instant favorite, you can download below. You can also stream the entire album here.

Thank you Olivier for always thinking of me and sending me amazing music. You need to start blogging more….I know, I know, life keeps us busy.

His Story:

It wasn’t planned. The goal was to hibernate.

Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. Tailing from the swirling breakup of his long time band, he escaped to the property and surround himself with simple work, quiet and space. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This special time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus.

The days slowly evolved into days filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song. The end result is, For Emma, Forever Ago, a nine-song album comprised of what’s been dubbed by those most familiar with his music: Vernon’s best work to date.

Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for “good winter” and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut of this lineage of songs. As a whole, the record is entirely cohesive throughout and remains centered around a particular esthetic, prompted by the time and place for which it was recorded. Vernon seems to have tested his boundaries to the maximum, and in doing so has managed to break free form any pre-cursing or finished forms. continue

Clear Tigers - Brutal

Clear Tigers - Nathan and friends

To be honest, i’m not able to find my way back to cleartigers.com while browsing the web couple days ago, but I’m sure my email address has already been subscribed to their mailing list.  I am eagerly awaiting for their debut full length album.
I’ve found some new information about this band and my curiosity guided me to their contact form asking them a couple of questions.

Here’s the transcript.

YCD : Could you please introduce Clear Tigers ?
Nathan Akin : Clear Tigers is my recording project. My name is Nathan Akin. I live in Brooklyn, New York. I compose music and write songs. I wrote some
songs and recorded them myself at a friend’s studio here in Brooklyn.
Then I recruited some other friends to help me perform the music in
order to promote it. When playing shows, I’m joined by Tim Traynor,
Jeremy Schoenherr-Lachance, David Sanderson, Catherine Herrick, and Lisa Baker.

YCD : Influences ?
Nathan Akin : My influences are Terry Riley, Lightning Bolt, Joni Mitchell, Elliott Smith, Neu, Aphex Twin, techno on the Force Inc label, Spacemen 3, and many others. I also love french composers Faure and of course Debussy.

YCD : What’s on your stereo at the moment ?
Nathan Akin : Right now my stereo’s broken, but I’m listening to Ariel Pink, and I also like Feist.

YCD : Projects ?
Nathan Akin : As for projects, Clear Tigers is definitely planning to release the full length, “Brutal”, later this month.

I’d like to thank Nathan for taking time to answer these questions and allow us to post the two following songs from their first hand-screened eponymous E.P.

Crooked Fingers

Crooked Fingers

So there i was checking my e-mails as normal and i start reading one from merge records where i read a review of this bands album Dignity and shame. They are from Seattle,Washington but don’t let that put you off. Led by former arches of loaf singer Eric bachmann this album by all accounts is a concept album based on the lives of the spanish Bullfighter Manolete and the Spanish actress Lope Sino although you wouldn’t necessarily know that from just listening to it.

You can hear all sorts of influences in this. Calexico,Wilco,Iron and wine are all comparisons i have heard but i personally think his voice sounds a mixture of Neil Diamond and Tom petty and at times Dylan which for me isn’t a bad thing being a huge fan of all three. However, the addition of Sarah Shannon on backing vocals on some tracks is a masterstroke, gives the songs a new dimension, a lift.

They are about to Embark on a Big U.S Tour with the Great Josh Ritter and if he chose these personally then Hats off to you Mr Ritter.

I think the best thing really is just to listen and find out for yourselves. Please if you like it then buy the album either from your local independant record store (we need to save the independant stores) or direct from Merge from the link further up the page.

I hope you’s love these as much as i do and anyone going to see Josh on his tour are in for a treat with these as support and i would love some feedback on them.

You can stream a couple of tracks from their album from their website or listen on their myspace page. It’s difficult to know which songs for you to choose to listen to now but try these. Hope you enjoy.

Peace

Firewater - The Golden Hour

Tod Ashley

As musically rich and joyful as a Manu Chao with La Mano Negra, as powerful and foot-taping dancing as a first Louise Attaque or Les Negresses Vertes - sorry for so much froggies - , as satanic as the Rolling Stones used to be, as drunken as some of the best irish Pogues, here’s the Firewater come-back…

After 3 years of silence since their last release ‘Songs we should have written’ - a collection of cover songs, Tod Ashley is back from an asian, eastern trip, full of inspirations, stories, sounds, silences, rhythms.

After streaming the first tracks of “The Golden Hour” from their myspace place, it’s sounds evident that Firewater imminent release is more than ever full of extraordinary world and music style melting : gipsy, klezmer, cabaret, ska, jazz…

Andy Whittle

Andy Whittle

I’ve been addicted to Andy Whittle’s music for a couple months now, thanks to the enlightened opinion of my fellow Ray LaMontagne messenger and blog contributor : Martin.
I’ve bought both of Andy Whittle’s albums this summer and his songs are still looping in my tunes library. His music has already become part of my collection of old classics such as ‘Recent songs’ from L. Cohen.

A Songmaker’s TaleHis two singles - ‘Old Fashioned Dream’ in 2006 and ‘A Songmaker’s Tale’ in may 2007 - revealed a complete artist with a mature songwriting capability (25 years old) and a multi-instrumental player. Andy was originally trained in classical music, a career as a concert pianist beckoned in his teens until his piano teacher forbade him from playing his own compositions…

Find below a track from each of his albums.
