Timber Timbre – I love you like a Mountain

Like a Mountain ‘a capella’ introduction could remind a Travis song, listen it entirely and it’s absolutely blues… with any doubt. Thousands miles up from Georgia, Canadian – once again – band, Timber Timbre played the blues. A delicate, whispering, and tormented blues that is gorgeously spilling life ! How could it be different ?

Medicinals - Timber TimbreReleased in February, ‘Medicinals‘ is the second full length of the Toronto band – primarily solo project for singer/songwriter Taylor Kirk, and a must have in your 2007 folk collection.

“I’m weary of accepting (blues) as my genre,” Taylor confessed to Michael Barclay, “because when I listen to blues-era recordings, it sounds to me like the purest form of musical expression. I couldn’t even tell you about any current blues musicians. I’m mostly listening to the old recordings now, like Son House, Leroy Carr and various Blind Willies.”

Sung with a gospel-soft tenor the songs send a warm shiver down the spine as you feel comfortable enough to relax but unnerved to the point you may find it hard to turn it off“. No better words from Dave Baden to describe the addiction !

Craig Cardiff – Smallest Wingless

craig.jpg
Insomnia, I really do have a problem with sleeping yet I can’t manage to wake up in the mornings. Go figure.

This time last year I was in Canada experiencing a true winter with snow flakes and all. What a difference a year makes. Well before I start rambling on, I want to leave you all with this beautiful singer/songwriter Craig Cardiff. If you’ve never heard of him before, I recommend you buy his album Good Night (Go Home) this is one out of ten he has. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

A 10-year veteran of the indie music scene throughout Canada, Craig is a traveling troubadour playing shows across the country, in small towns, big cities, neighborhood pubs and even your living room. My lazy man reviewer comparison will yield Iron & Wine and Damien Rice. If one were to look up indie in the dictionary, before it was redefined into a genre or style, before it was hipster territory, you would find this humble yet outspoken man with an impressive word-of-mouth following.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal

fleet-fox.jpgWith the year quickly approaching it’s end, I’m all of sudden starting to feel the anticipation of what next year will bring us. It was a great year of music but I can’t stop thinking about what awaits us in 2008. Ray LaMontagne is back in the studio recording in January, that in itself should be enough to full fill us all for the year, but I wanted to leave you all with this amazing band that is currently finishing their debut album for 2008.

It seems that the wonderful city of Seattle is giving us some great bands/artist this year like J. Tillman, Bill Patton and now Fleet Foxes. I’m sorry I didn’t post this sooner you could have caught Robin Pecknold (vocals/guitarist for Fleet Foxes) tonight along with J. Tillman at Crocodile in Seattle. I meant to post about it earlier, just didn’t get to it on time.

The five-piece band was in the process of working out a deal with an unnamed label for a February 2008 release of their debut album which is currently being produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Band of Horses, Modest Mouse). I read somewhere that they were currently opening for The Shins so some of you may have heard of them already. There isn’t much information on them on their MySpace page nor do they have an official website up yet, but they did post that in March of 2008 they will be on tour. This is a band to look out for, I’ll post any updates as I find out more.

Happy Holiday’s and I can’t wait for 2008!

C S Nielsen

C S Nielsen is from Denmark. C S Nielsen sounds like the late Johnny Cash. C S Stands for ”Country Stig” It’s pretty much all you need to know to be honest. His Debut album has been on constant play since i bought it Directly from Stig in the last couple of weeks. When a tv channel in Denmark had a Johnny cash tribute night they also included C S Nielsen on the same night because of the similarities. I don’t think he deliberately tries to sound like Johnny he just happens to do so.His songwriting is superb especially in the song rage which is available for a listen on this site. Enjoy

OCTOBERMAN

band-octoberman.jpg

Canadian Octoberman (Marc Morrissette) has recently released his Album ‘Run from safety’ and white whale records write the following and saves me a hell of a lot of time.

Embodying the sensibilities of Neil Young’s songcraft and Jack Kerouac’s travelogues, These Trails won widespread praise from Uncut, Maverick, The Globe and Mail and dozens of other publications. Just as Morrissette’s penchant for melancholic vocals and melodic guitar work caught the ears of critics, it won the hearts of audiences. The songwriter established Octoberman as a live institution in Vancouver, sometimes taking to the stage with a seven-piece backing band and on other occasions with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and harmonica. 2006’s seven-song, live-recorded Laguardia EP ideally encapsulated the intimacy and immediacy of these solo Octoberman performances.

Upon first listen, it’s evident that Run From Safety is not only an album title but also a bold statement of intent. It sublimely captures the sound of an artist abandoning the tried and true and striking out in unknown directions. While still fuelled by wanderlust, Octoberman’s music continues to remind us that not all journeys can be measured by distance alone. Run From Safety brims with inspired instrumentation, accomplished orchestration and newfound urgency. Furthermore, it sees Morrissette bringing the indie pop sensibility of his Kids These Days material back to the fore

Fans of Stephen Malkus’ wordplay, Bright Eyes’ earnestness and Elliott Smith’s tunefulness will find themselves readily enthralled with Octoberman’s latest offering.

She won’t listen – Old Lost John

In a recent post, I thought I had toured the 2007 Swedish scene. But some brilliant artists are left to be discovered, some extraordinary songs are left to be heard then to be sung…

Tomas Thunberg aka Old Lost John Old Lost John is the musical project of Swedish songsmith  Tomas Thunberg. After taking part in the FAWM project… composing 14 tracks in the 28 days of February, he also released his second full length sooner this year : ‘The Ghost of Calder Mountain‘. Described as “Dark americana folk with a slightly traditional touch” Thundberg has this unique ubiquity gift allowing you to fly over the mediterranean and reaching the higher plains of Montana at the same time. This guy is the meeting of two genious artists Leonard Cohen and Knut Hamsun.. Sure, many of you will ban me forever to join together such talents opposed by history. But I hope listening to the following song, Thomas recently published on his website will change your mind…

Well… Check his website, couple tracks from his FAWM performance could be download.

Jake Newton – I’m a Bird

Jake Newton

Better later than never, I’ve just discovered this songwriter from California : Jake Newton. He released this last May, a collection of six original tracks : ‘I’m a Bird‘.

According to J.T. Hogan – The Barn : He’s already been called the most honest voice in new music. Jake Newton comes to LA with a voice so clear it makes the girlies swoon, and a words that aren’t afraid to make them think.

After listening his EP couple times, we have to confirm : Newton multi-instrumentalist (mandolins, banjoes, electric guitars and concertinas) is using his voice as a great and sweet instrument performing some amazing variations. These bittersweet love songs are really well crafted and deserves more than a single try :

With Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Iron and Wine and Tom Waits as influences, he found a unique balance between folk and rock that could remind Andy Whittle. This short collection are impressively well produced for a first try !

Let’s hope Jake will be shortly back with an equivalent full length ! The EP is available through Cdbaby and iTunes.
