Leatherbag - Love Me Like The Devil

This one is for Martin. So I felt the need to redeem myself since I’ve been posting somewhat “poppy” artist as of late. Now just to clarify below I said the song ’sewn’ was in my head but not that I particularly appreciated the fact that it was in my head. So let’s get on with new/old better things. Leatherbag isn’t new this year to the folk world but he is new to me. Some of you may already know of him since songs:illinois posted about him back in March of 2007. I however just discovered him by chance. I found an old friend on myspace and he had the song Tennessee streaming on his page. So after a bit of research I found him on Myspace and CD Baby. Martin if you haven’t already heard of Leatherbag I think he’s right up your alley.

Label:Super Pop Records

An album unto itself. Cello, lap steel, guitar and vocals. “Love Me Like the Devil’ is a simple record that is both haunting and beautiful.

Andrew Smith - EP

andrew-smith.jpgAndrew Smith plays on a band called Paper Route, which I have to admit I have on my playlist, but they are a bit “Electronic” for my taste, however this EP is more stripped down along the lines of what I like. He has that kinda of voice I could just sit and listen to without getting tired of him. Check him out for yourselves.

The Felice Brothers - Fingerprints

Come on people and doesn’t get any better than this. If you live near by take the day off work, it’ll be worth it!

From Fingerprints:

The Felice Brothers - Free In-Store / Free Lunch

Tuesday, Feb. 12th, Noon
Felice Brothers

There is a small town in the Catskill Mountains where the nights are filled with music, and it’s a family affair; mothers, brothers, and cousins all making a joyful racket; Jail, guns, and drugs are always a possibility, but so are love, laughter, and salvation - and the outcome is unknown until it’s been sung.

Every once in a while a band comes along and stops you in your tracks, if you’re lucky it happens often, if it only happens once in a while, hopefully it’s powerful when it does; The most recent band to provide just such a “stop you walking” moment for me is The Felice Brothers. A true band of brothers (and a blood brother) these boys make music that Uncut Magazine called “Brilliant…. Evoking Dylan and the Band holed up in Big Pink…. The new heroes of Americana.” They damn near nailed it with that, but it leaves out the incredible broken, back porch quality of their music, a music that sounds like it’s the best thing to come out of the time before electricity. Beautiful, broken, a bit bawdy, and sure to bring a smile, these boys are not to be missed.

Here is some other press:
Right now my favorite drinking buddy is The Felice Brothers. It’s music best described by my friend: It’s three in the morning, sleepy drunk, secretly holding the hand of the one you love.
- Laura Barton/The Guardian

The Felice Brothers write epic songs with lofty titles and they wield a massive accordion. All that is reason enough to give them a day in court.
- Vice Magazine

Recalls young Springsteen, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt.
- Time Out NY

Check out a couple of their songs on their myspace page (make sure to hear “Frankie’s Gun”). And please give this video for “Roll On Arte” a couple of your minutes.

The Felice Brothers are currently touring with The Drive-by Truckers and The North Mississippi All-Stars, including local dates at The HOB (Anaheim) and The Avalon (Hollywood).

This Free Lunch event will include music and pizza, and is only open to Live Music Club members. Please call us to get on the guest list (grab a drink on your way in).

Song I can’t get out of my head - The Feeling “Sewn”

I bought the “Across the Pond” cd a few weeks ago. I know, I know, how could I buy from Starbucks but I am very supportive of my friends the Guggi’s from Across the Pond so I had too. So I’m listening and now for weeks I can’t get this song out of my head. “Give me the song and I’ll sing it like I mean it ” … you’ve got me sewn … na na na na na na na “

- wow how cute are these guys!

Jason Collett - Here’s to Being Here

My wonderful husband bought me a gift certificate to my favorite indie record shop. I’m in the process of compiling a list of must buys for the start of the year so if anyone has any suggestions leave me a comment. Now on to the post. Jason Collett was on my list to buy but after a bit of research this album hasn’t received very good reviews. So I’m curious. Has anyone listened to this album in it’s entirety? If so, is it worth the buy? Or maybe some of his earlier work is better.

John Craigie - Soft Hail

John Craigie

Californian songwriter John Craigie will be live next week February the 12th @ Hotel Utah - San Francisco, for the release of his 5th full length album : Soft Hail.

5th album… I’ve just bought “Picnic on 405″ last week, his 2007 fourth release. And I’m still starving : you know Soft Hail - John Craigiethat my appetite for that kind of music is simply insatiable ! Prolific and young, and talented. I won’t tell you that his previous albums are as good as Picnic - I simply can’t afford for the moment to buy his complete discography ! But each of my 13 bucks, buying this album, were immediatly multiply to the value of millions for each of the songs it handles !

For all of you crazy readers that are already addicted to John Craigie’s delicious acoustic mixture of blues and folk, please be sure to leave us a comment about his previous releases. For the others, find below two tracks. The first one from the album I owned and a second one from his coming one. - count on me for positing here a detailed review about ‘Soft Hail’ ! In the meantime, please, send us a feedback from the show.

Chris Pureka - Dryland

Chris Pureka

“Chris Pureka’s sophomore release, Dryland plays like the way she enters a room: with low, deliberate airs, quietly demanding respect. One stark, solo acoustic guitar builds into layered swan songs and raspy serenades that resonate with unassuming depth and candor.” Quote from her myspace page.

As long as I can remember, it was while browsing Gregory Alan Isakov website, that i’ve been clicked to Chris Pureka website. I’m sure most of you are already addicted by this unique artist but I can’t resist sharing this recent discovery - better later than never… You can read a recent interview about Dryland her second full length released in 2006.

Choosing a song to tease your ears was a real difficult exercise as the complete album is offering high quality melodies, writings and arrangements from start to end. If you have couple bucks left, be sure to buy her complete discography.
