The new album “Dark On Fire” from British folk duo Turin Brakes (Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian) was released this week in the UK and I’ve been patiently waiting to hear their new material for a long time. Patience is not one of my virtues unfortunately, so this release could not have come soon enough! Having given this album a few listens, I feel the boys are back on form when compared to their last release “Jack In A Box”…Don’t get me wrong, I did like the CD (they could make up a song and harmonize about a turd and I would probably still like it) and there were a few outstanding tracks but I feel they lost a little bit of the flow that was present on “The Optimist LP” and “Ether Song”. Ethan Johns is the producer on this album who has also worked with the 2 loves of my musical life, Ray LaMontagne *sigh* and Ryan Adams *sigh*…outstanding tracks for me right now are “Bye Pod”…”Otherside”…”For The Fire”…and the title track “Dark On Fire”…hell the whole album is fantastic. Buy it now!
I’ve blogged about Jeffrey a few weeks ago (see post here) but I got to finally see him perform for the first time last night at Schubas in Chicago. Amazing amazing show…I can not stress enough that this guy is a MUST SEE if he comes through your town.
I don’t think I have been this excited for a soundtrack in a very long time. Quite possibly the best. soundtrack. ever.
Due out Oct. 30th. Movie in theaters November 21st.
Taken from ioncinema.com : Formerly going by the title of “I’m Not There: Suppositions on a Film Concerning Dylan”, this is a film about the life of Bob Dylan. The film follows seven characters, each embodying a different aspect of Dylan’s life story and music. It’s the first biographical feature project to secure the approval of the pop culture icon. The film is about the life of Bob Dylan’s early days as a struggling folksinger, the rise to the forefront of the early-’60s folk scene, the controversial switch to rock, the motorcycle accident and the subsequent retreat from public view, and the latter-day de-emphasis of recording and concentration on the concert series known as the Never Ending Tour. Sounes somehow has uncovered some new information in that oft-scanned showbiz legend, mostly about Dylan’s childhood and his jealously guarded family life. Some of it actually provides further insight into his songs, particularly those about his wife, Sara. Sounes also blows the lid off Dylan’s heretofore unknown 1986 marriage to one of his backup singers. Each story expresses an aspect of Dylan’s mercurial personality and each story is to be filmed differently, in a style appropriate to its theme: Woody (Franklin) - an 11-year-old black boy, always on the run; Robbie - a womanising performer, always on the road; Jude (Blanchett) - the young androgynous rock star; John/Jack (Bale) - a folk idol who reinvents himself as an evangelist; Billy (Gere) - the famous outlaw, miraculously alive but growing old.

These Texas natives first grabbed me when my best friend played me “Telescope Eyes” a couple years back…one of those infectious pop-rock songs we just loved to drive around a sing-a-long to. Saw them at the Double Door in Chicago a few years ago and I was quite impressed.
Eisley is composed of siblings Sherri, Stacy, Chauntelle and Weston Dupree and their cousin, Garron Dupree. Their new album “Combinations” was release last month.
I’m really liking their new song called “Invasion”
Big big Swell Season fan here as my fellow Crazy Dreamers know. I have the lovely Trini to thank for introducing me to them last year from a link she posted in the Ray LaMontagne forum. It was love at first listen. I was fortunate enough to see them perform twice, both times opening for Damien Rice back in December 06. They just blew me away….simple and beautifully haunting melodies.
For those who don’t know, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (aka “The Swell Season”) are the stars of the movie “Once” and bring their stunning songs to the big screen. It is a wonderful movie….so if you have not seen it, I highly recommend that you do. Recently listened to their performance on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic which was recorded on July 31, 2007. You can listen to the stream and watch video of the performance here. Click that link to also watch a video ofan exclusive post-broadcast cover of Glen singing “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison.
Hello all you fellow crazy dreamers….first post from me here. I may not be the best writer in the world like my fellow partners in crime, but that will not stop me from sharing my thoughts in this blog world.
Jeffrey Foucault is one of my most recent finds….while he may not be brand spankin’ new in the music world (his most recent disk is from 2006), his music is new to me (better late than never, right?) and I think he is just fantastic. Been listening to him a lot lately. Eagerly anticipating his show here in Chicago at Schubas on Sept. 9th.
His song “I Dream An Old Lover” is a stunner (which you can find streaming on his MySpace here) This tune is on his CD Ghost Repeater and is one of my favorites…it just oozes heartache. This little blurb taken from his website:
Written over the course of a year in which Foucault married, Ghost Repeater juxtaposes a personal narrative of hope and beauty against the wider story of the times, in a series of travelogues and dreamscapes. Words like bloom and fade, truth and mercy, dream and memory recur through the album to create a sort of grammar, a palette of colors that Foucault and Ramsey merge with dark washes of electric guitar and vocals hushed or plaintive, in a visionary portrait of modern Americana.
Perfect listening for a lazy Sunday afternoon or a road trip.
Here is a performance of him performing “One for Sorrow” at the Green River Festival in 2006
