Griffin House - Flying Upside Down

I’ve been listening to Griffin House ever since his “Lost and Found” album.  There are several songs off that album that I still love but the one that initially captured my attention was “Waterfall”, it’s such a beautiful sad song.  Another one of my favorites was “Tell Me Lie”.  It wasn’t until this weekend when my iPod was on shuffle that I was reminded of him again.

I was online today buying some music and ran across a review of Griffin’s new album, so I ventured over to his page to hear a little more.  It’s funny because I’ve never really thought he sounded much like Jack Johnson but for some odd reason someone did.  Maybe it’s just me but I don’t hear the comparison.

Review below from Fingerprints:

Griffin House - Flying Upside Down
Griffin is a songwriter who will forever be compared to Jack Johnson, only because Jack got there first. Griffin has a laid-back feel to his music, but where Jack feels like the beach, Griffin’s music is much more informed by solid characters and an earthy-ness that just isn’t associated with the coast - it’s music that is much more like a house-fire than a bonfire.

He’s currently on tour, I’m thinking of catching his Troubadour show I’ve missed him every other time he’s been in L.A.

Devendra Banhart - Indie on MTV?

Who would have thought that anyone from the Indie scene would be featured on MTV. It’s rare the time I’m on MTV, well except for my addiction to “The Hills” yes, I watch the show. I have to admit that I recently found this guy on a gossip site yes, I read those too but he’s no stranger to the music blog world. MOKB listed him as one of his top albums for 2007. Although I try my best to keep up it always seems that I’m just discovering some talent for the first time. Devendra will be performing in Los Angeles in June. His on my list to see for the summer.

Off the MTV news site:

Eccentric Venezuelan/Los Angelino merry folkster, Devendra Banhart, shot a new music video last weekend that stars one of our favorite people ever, Natalie Portman (seriously, she’s like the nicest person in the world). Oh but here’s the funny part. While both Portman’s folks and Devendra’s folks confirm this shoot took place over the weekend, at Banhart’s crazy canyon home in LA, neither camp WILL SAY WHAT SONG THE VIDEO IS FOR. They’re keeping it very secret and stuff.

We think that’s just silly.

Is it a song off of his recently released Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, or perhaps it’s that exclusive Devendra song that appeared on the compilation Portman put out to benefit FINCA, the microfinance charity she’s a big supporter of.

Phosphorescent - Review

I went to go see Bon Iver last night at The Echo in Los Angeles and I can’t say enough about how amazing Justin is. I’m sure everyone that reads here on a daily basis knows that he is by far my favorite artist this year. I knew that Phosphorescent was opening up for him but I didn’t know much about their music. I was just so excited to see Bon Iver I didn’t bother looking them up. I had a nice nice chat with Justing while Phosphorescent was setting up and he had nothing but great things to say about these guys and assured me I would enjoy the set. He was right, the set was great. I don’t think these guy’s knew they were the opening act, they gave an energetic show. I found a prime seat stage right and was just captivated by Ben McConnell their drummer. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him, he was sick ( as in bad a** good). They will be on tour with Bon Iver so if you have a chance to catch one of their shows, do so you won’t be dissapointed.

Rachael Yamagata - Review

I saw Rachael a few days ago at the Hotel Cafe. It was great to see her once again, it’s been a long time since she’s been out on tour. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a live video recording of the night since I lost my camera charger. Still no word on when the new album will be out but she sang a lot of the new stuff and it sounds great! Here’s a song she’s been singing since last year, Sunday Afternoon. I think it will be on the new album. Just love the lyrics.

sunday afternoon

it’s a choice
to stay
it’s a dream
and i wanna wake

you have blood on your hands
and i’m feeling faint
and honey
you can’t decide

i’m a drug
you don’t wanna give up
smoke your cigarettes
make your love

you poured blood in my heart
and i can’t get enough
i’m drowning, drowning
and you can’t decide

it’s not about geography, or happenstance
you need to fly, and take a chance
you don’t need to soar to emptiness
float on high and forever dance alone

you’re scared, scared, scared
’cause i feel like home

hear your voice
knew right away
if you were here
your eyes would say

there is blood on my feet
as i’m walking away
the rivers are red
it’s starting to rain

i’m not gonna live for you, or die for you
or do anything anymore for you
’cause you leave me here on the other side
won’t you leave me here on the other side

not gonna live for you, or die for you
or do anything…
not gonna shed one more tear for you

at least not ’till sunday afternoon
