Arlan Feiles - Come Sunday Morning

I’ve been quite silent these past months, partly due to my business and partly due to the fact that few albums really fascinated me. Amongst the few, one is still playing from start to end : Come Sunday Morning from Arlan Feiles !

For his second full length solo effort, Mr Feiles has composed and produced the most appealing collection of tracks : from americana-tinted ballads including banjo, dobro and fiddle, to pure acoustic guitar-vocals promenades and through some perfect folk piano driven harmonies. A rich combination where the Los Angeles native songwriter found place to lay his engaged lyrics - album is even including a spoken track ! Here’s an excerpt from his biography page..

‘It is now again time to be tested as Americans. To become the difference makers that have shaped the world today. As one voice as a nation of hope. A Demand for peace fairness and liberty to every man, women and child. To insist on the promise of justice. To reclaim our rights afforded by the good people of the greatest country in the world. The dream is not forgotten. - Still always a dreamer.’

Come Sunday MorningFacing such a talent - Arlan has shared stages with The Band, The late Warren Zevon, Hot Tuna, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Warren Haynes, Dave Mathews, Bob Pollard, and many more. - I could not resist buying his previous album. “Razing a nation” released in 2005 and re-issued last year is also written in the same vein. It contains the single Sign-up who has been top of the list of Neil Young’s “Living with War- Songs of the Times”.

Once again, I won’t torture myself selecting the single track to tease your ears as each of this amazing album deserved to be listened… here’s the intro -album - titled track.

Tom Schraeder - New Album Coming Soon

It’s a strange time when you can call someone you met on MySpace a friend. I would say that about Tom however we really haven’t been able to connect outside of the Space world. One thing I can say though is that I’ve met several people on the net whom I now consider good friends and all because of Ray LaMontagne, his music brought as all together. Tom and I started chatting several years ago when Ray was out here touring with Rachel Yamagata. I’ve been in touch on and off.

Laura you might know of him since he’s been hitting the Chicago scene for several years now. If you don’t know of him you soon will. He recently finished his debut album, it is currently being mastered and I’m really looking forward to hearing what he’s done.

I’ll leave you with a few of his songs from his gigging days. From the looks of it I think these may be on his new album, I’m not sure if he ever released them before but I had them under “Jennifer LP” so they must have been.

Check him out on his MySpace page. You can also find him on Virb. I think you all will like him.

Jeff Zentner

jeff-z.jpg

“i write songs for those who see the face of god in dirt and rust and broken things. for those who love desolation and who make of it ceremony and song. for those who bear memory’s weight and who count the days of their youth in the blinking lights of distant radio towers and deserted intersections. who read in the crumbling names of towns on water towers the dispatches of passing seasons and forgotten heartbeats. for those who in dreams find great and unknowable mystery. who love words that sound upon their lips like secrets and sighs.”

The above is taken from Jeff Zentner myspace profile. I found those words so beautiful that I read them again and again….The imagery is what got to me….which is what good writing, song writing, and music in general is supposed to accomplish, right? It makes you feel, it transports you to somewhere else….a memory, or a place in time perhaps.

Jeff’s solo work definately reminds me of something from the past…On his album “Hymns to the Darkness”, he combines guitar, slide guitar, dobro, banjo, pedal steel, lap steel, mandolin, cello, piano, and organ to form some truly wonderful songs that have a twing of Appalachia about them. His southern roots definately come through in his music.

This talented Ashville, NC based musician is also part of the band Creech Holler. Jeff is on vocals, Clawhammer and the Bottleneck Guitar. Definately check these guys out if you like your bluesy southern rock.

“…a Tennessee-based trio who do this crazed amalgamation of old-time ballads set to loud, grungy blues rock. It’s very dark and eerie and completely satisfying.”
–MOUNTAIN XPRESS, Asheville NC

Check out their myspace here.

Jeff was kind enough to grant YCD a little interview….so I present to you 7 questions with YCD:

1. What was the first record/album you ever bought?

Out of Time, R.E.M. Not too embarrassing.

2. What are you currently listening to?

I’ve been listening to The Black Angels a good deal lately. I’ve been listening to Queen Adreena and a Norwegian band called Madrugada a lot as well. And then there is always a heaping dose of random odds and ends. It’s been medieval Spanish music for that.

3. Who or what inspired you to start making music?

I heard John Lee Hooker for the first time when I was 14, on a scratchy radio station. It was truly an awakening. I started out playing blues similar to what I heard that night, and my style has gradually shifted over the years.

4. If there was one song you wish you would have written what would it be, and why?

“Rake” by Townes Van Zandt. Because of the line

“I buried my face but it spoke once again
the night to the day we’re a bindin’
and now the dark air is like fire on my skin
and even the moonlight is blinding”

But more than any song that has ever been written, I wish that I wrote the book “Blood Meridian” by Cormac McCarthy. And I wish that I wrote every single poem that Joe Bolton wrote.

5. If you weren’t a musician what would you be doing now?
Being miserable and angry that I wasn’t a musician.

I’d probably be a photographer. Or maybe a writer. But it’s difficult to say, because I really only started writing in the context of music.

6. Is there anything new you are working on now?
I’m completing my second solo album. I’ve been releasing snippets and rough cuts on my myspace page. I’m also completing a second album with my band, Creech Holler.

7. For those readers who haven’t heard of you or your music before what would best describe you and your music?

I try to make my music poetry about beauty in desolate places. About love and dying. I suppose that tells you also what I think about most of the time.

McCarthy Trenching

mccarthy-trenching.jpg
McCarthy trenching it would seem is Nebraskas best kept secret. Signed to Conor Obersts (Bright eyes) team love label McCarthy’s self titled official debut came out in April 2007. He’s toured with fellow talented Nebraskans Mayday, Neva Dinova, The Good Life, Orenda Fink, Maria Taylor, Bright Eyes and many others which may give you some idea of his sound. A mixture of Bar room waltzes, poppy alt-country and some sweet ballads make up the album. I think 2008 could be the year McCarthy steps from out of the shadows of his contemporaries and possibly outshine them all.

Jeff Dernlan - Cobblestone

Jeff Dernlan

I’ve missed the opportunity last year to write about Jeff Dernlan second full length : ‘Broadmoor‘, as I’ve also missed to review his fellow americana songwriter and friend Rod Piccott superb Summerbirds album. It won’t be the case for Cobblestone, Dernlan’s last collection just released this March 11th and I just can’t stop it looping !

Jeff Dernlan - Cobblestone CoverJeff Dernlan’s music is exceeding the traditional borders of americana and country music, even if most of the new tracks could find their cradles in those genres. Two years, after Broadmoor - recorded in a one day session - which peaked at number 3 on the Euro Americana Radio Chart, Dernlan’s music evolved in a richer sound, giving the listener a unique and fresh experience ; for sure this new collection deserves the best ranking.

If you’re discovering Jeff Dernlan while reading these lines, this Philadelphia songwriter has shared the stage with Kathleen Edwards, Todd Snider, Tim Easton, and Rod Picott ! Check his website as solo tour dates are being scheduled.

James Moors - Hush

James Moors

James Moors ? You’ve surely already heard about this songwriter as his previous stage name used to be ‘Sterling Waters’. According to his sonicbids page : “... Moors now finds himself a family man and the fortunate father of two young girls. In an effort to live more presently and simplify his life a bit James has shed the stage name and relishes a new begining.

Hush - James MoorAnd for a new beginning, James Moors has been joined by an amazing list of renown musicians : Lisa Germano on violin (Bowie,Neil Finn,U2, John Mellencamp and Jewel), Marc Perlman (The Jayhawks) on bass, Ed Ackerson (Polara) and Ben Wisch (David Wilcox, Marc Cohn) on keyboards.

Sorry James, I’m a bit lost in translation these days… Your music will speak for yourself. Thank you so much for this brilliant new beginning. Fatherhood is, on any point of view, the deepest mirror.

Grant Campbell - Beyond Below

Grant Campbell

Few artists have the talent to attract your attention at the first note of an album and catch it till the very end. Scotish multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar, saxophone), Grant Campbell has achieved this songwriting prowess releasing his second album last year : Beyond Below.
Campbell’s gravely voice is openning ‘Bowery Beat’ as a first measure to an exceptional collection of 14 powerful & soulful tracks. From Townes Van Zandt to Bruce Springsteen, or from L. Cohen to B. Dylan, the Glasgow songwriter’s music navigates through differents genres (americana, folk, country and blues) and tempos (lullabies, ballads to almost steady-rock).

I’m still embarrassed to select the right track for streaming with such a good album, where each track reaches the quality of the previous… I’ve finally found the solution : Track One - Bowery Beat.
