The Felice Brothers - Free In-Store / Free Lunch

Tuesday, Feb. 12th, Noon
Felice Brothers

There is a small town in the Catskill Mountains where the nights are filled with music, and it’s a family affair; mothers, brothers, and cousins all making a joyful racket; Jail, guns, and drugs are always a possibility, but so are love, laughter, and salvation - and the outcome is unknown until it’s been sung.

Every once in a while a band comes along and stops you in your tracks, if you’re lucky it happens often, if it only happens once in a while, hopefully it’s powerful when it does; The most recent band to provide just such a “stop you walking” moment for me is The Felice Brothers. A true band of brothers (and a blood brother) these boys make music that Uncut Magazine called “Brilliant…. Evoking Dylan and the Band holed up in Big Pink…. The new heroes of Americana.” They damn near nailed it with that, but it leaves out the incredible broken, back porch quality of their music, a music that sounds like it’s the best thing to come out of the time before electricity. Beautiful, broken, a bit bawdy, and sure to bring a smile, these boys are not to be missed.

Here is some other press:
Right now my favorite drinking buddy is The Felice Brothers. It’s music best described by my friend: It’s three in the morning, sleepy drunk, secretly holding the hand of the one you love.
- Laura Barton/The Guardian

The Felice Brothers write epic songs with lofty titles and they wield a massive accordion. All that is reason enough to give them a day in court.
- Vice Magazine

Recalls young Springsteen, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt.
- Time Out NY

Check out a couple of their songs on their myspace page (make sure to hear “Frankie’s Gun”). And please give this video for “Roll On Arte” a couple of your minutes.

The Felice Brothers are currently touring with The Drive-by Truckers and The North Mississippi All-Stars, including local dates at The HOB (Anaheim) and The Avalon (Hollywood).

This Free Lunch event will include music and pizza, and is only open to Live Music Club members. Please call us to get on the guest list (grab a drink on your way in).

AA Bondy - American Hearts

aa-bondy.jpegI recently received an email from Ross, a member of Ray LaMontange’s Fan site, and YCD blog. He recommended a few artist that I did not have on my play list or that I had not mentioned before. So I bring you AA Bondy (Olly, I already saw him on your play list. Is there anyone you haven’t heard of yet?) for those of us who haven’t check out this great blog about him on Pop Headwound.

Chris Garneau - Music for Tourist

chris.jpg

My find of the week (Found it on our own YCD site, Olly wrote about him back in Nov. of 07. What can I say sometimes I miss things on here) Chris Garneau - Album Music for Touris

From what I’ve read about Chris he’s been getting some comparisons to the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright and from what I’ve listened to so far, he too creates down tempo piano tunes full of sadness and woe like Sufjan and Rufus. It’s just what the doctor ordered for those gloomy rainy days. (sorry woe me, it’s raining in sunny so. Cali. rain = sad)

Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal

fleet-fox.jpgWith the year quickly approaching it’s end, I’m all of sudden starting to feel the anticipation of what next year will bring us. It was a great year of music but I can’t stop thinking about what awaits us in 2008. Ray LaMontagne is back in the studio recording in January, that in itself should be enough to full fill us all for the year, but I wanted to leave you all with this amazing band that is currently finishing their debut album for 2008.

It seems that the wonderful city of Seattle is giving us some great bands/artist this year like J. Tillman, Bill Patton and now Fleet Foxes. I’m sorry I didn’t post this sooner you could have caught Robin Pecknold (vocals/guitarist for Fleet Foxes) tonight along with J. Tillman at Crocodile in Seattle. I meant to post about it earlier, just didn’t get to it on time.

The five-piece band was in the process of working out a deal with an unnamed label for a February 2008 release of their debut album which is currently being produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Band of Horses, Modest Mouse). I read somewhere that they were currently opening for The Shins so some of you may have heard of them already. There isn’t much information on them on their MySpace page nor do they have an official website up yet, but they did post that in March of 2008 they will be on tour. This is a band to look out for, I’ll post any updates as I find out more.

Happy Holiday’s and I can’t wait for 2008!

Christian Kjellvander - I saw her from here, I saw here from Her

Christian Kjellvander

More reviews have to be written before “charting” this great musical vintage. Released November the 7th, the new Christian Kjellvander full length will be part of my yearly top - as each Kjellvander album.

Christian Kjellvander - I saw her from here, I saw here from Her

This new 10 tracks collection titled ‘I saw her from here, I saw here from her‘ is a great balance between his first critically acclaim solo effort ‘Songs from the Two room Chapels‘ and his more intimate ‘Faya‘ 2005 release. Oscillating between soft piano ballads and deeper alternative-country tunes with banjo and even pedal steel to some more power songs such as first single ‘Two Souls‘ with trompet and cornet, Kjellvander’s songwriting and composition are both dense and varied : seemly delectable ! Let’s also mention the appearance of Karla-Therese Kjellvander as vocals on ‘When the Mourning Come’ is simply irresistible.

The Last Town Chorus - Wire Waltz

2006_artists_den.jpg

I was visiting The Artist Den website recently and found The Last Town Chorus. About a year ago I was introduced to their music by accident. I had fallen in love with the sound of the lap steel guitar, thanks to Ben Harper, and in my search of artist that played it I found The Last Town Chours band. They’ve had an ever changing line up but one thing or person who has remained constant has been Megan, and thankfully for them. She has a beautiful voice and can play the lap steel, I mean what more can you ask for.

Some of you may recognize her by the song “Modern Love” it was in the t.v show Grey’s Anatomy last year. I guess one good thing that can come out of these shows is that who ever is choosing the music is doing a great job.

Kings of Convenience - Homesick

I really need to get my laptop out of the bedroom. I keep telling myself I need to get to bed earlier but I find myself stumbling, it’s just so addictive. I was checking out a picture Susana posted of her and I on her myspace page. As I was getting ready to click on the picture she had this song streaming on her page. I must have listened to over and over again. I keep telling her to post something on here, she has amazing taste in music. The song was “Day’s I had with You” by Kings of Convenience. I had never heard of them before, so here I am hours later just in awe of this guy. Erlend Oye, is a very busy musician who plays in multiple bands one which is Kings of Convenience.

From what I’ve been able to find on some great blogs about him, he’s not only sung as the duo Kings of Convenience (with Eirik Glambek Boe), The Whitest Boy Alive, and as guest vocalist on James Figurine’s song “All the Way to China.” He’s made so many guest vocal appearances it was difficult to keep track of them.

Which brings me to this song I found earlier today, not the one on Susana’s page, but this song called “Know How.” It features Feist she joins him halfway through the song. I think by far my favorite song of all the one’s I’ve listened to today is “Homesick”, I say today because I’m sure that’ll change the more I listen to these guys.

I also posted other songs I found from various bloggers “Failure,” a song off their 2001 release Quiet Is the New Loud, a live version of “Until You Understand”, “I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From” and “Homesick” as well as a youtube video of “Misread”. So if these isn’t enough information to get you hooked on this guy than I don’t know what is.

Now if we could only get Susana to start posting some of her wonderful finds.
